A heartfelt news hit the manga-anime industry on 12th of August 2026 as the industry mourns the passing away of a very talented manga artist Umezu Youko. She was the illustrator of this series along with the story writer Kota Amana. She passed away due Cerebral infraction just 3 weeks after the latest chapter release of Vermeil in Gold Ch.41.
Story-line

Alto is a young aspiring magician who is tensed and desperate because he might fail the year, the reason? He can't summon a familiar for himself. He desperately looked for options and solutions which led him to library and a dirty old book looking like thousands of years old stumbled upon him, it reads summoning (originally a Grimoire) and without a second thought Alto run with it from library and prepared everything that the book says in his home. He proceed the summoning and he succeed this time but little that he knew that he had not summoned any other familiar creature but a Demon. His desperation was blinding him to grasp the gravity of the situation and ended up sealing a contract with the demon as a familiar of him. That demon is known as Vermeil, a mature looking woman who is hungry for mana all the time. And she is quite a flirty in nature as she never fails to tease Alto by kissing him sucking mana slowly out of him on every kiss.
The series is a classic fantasy anime style storytelling, What begins as a frantic attempt to stay in school quickly expands into a larger story of growing power, complicated relationships, academy rivalries, and the dangerous history surrounding Vermeil herself. As Alto and Vermeil navigate life together, they are drawn into conflicts that test both their bond and the limits of the magical world around them.
Manga Serialization

The series was published by Square Enix on monthly Shonen Gangan from September 2018 till July 2026. The latest chapter of the series marks the final chapter by the publishers as they decided to force end it after the passing away of its illustrator. The series had more than 200,000 copies sold by the end of February 2021 since serialization while no latest update are available in public domain. The series got an anime adaptation and aired in the summer season of 2022.

An English dub premiered in late September 2022 and has streamed on HIDIVE. Final remarks

The series did garnered a descent number of fans, especially with its characters and their relationship dynamics. Vermeil's back story was briefly touched upon in season 1 of the anime and it really touched some hearts out there. Vermeil's loving and bold nature is what fans like in the series. The side characters like Alto's childhood friend Lilia and the student council members also give the necessary dynamics to the story without concentrating heavily on the main characters only. The evils of the series carries a secrecy which always keeps you thinking and wanting more details which is good for a long series to have (never fold everything to soon). The main characters are not overpowered such that they are slashing every obstacles they face which also keep the only option open for the mains which is to work their way up.

Overall the series was well stitched and entertaining at the same time. In myanimelist the manga scores a 7.12 and the anime scores 6.8 . I want to give the series a 7 for overall flavour but for Vermeil and the artist who lost her life drawing the wonderful panels of the series I would give a 9.
Thank you for reading. Happy weebing.
